Tour underground, visit the Coal Camp, the Museum and the Gift Shop stocked with West Virginia items & freshly made fudge in a variety of flavors. The hands-on exhibitions and underground coal mining tour offer wonderful opportunities for our visitors to learn, explore, interact and share.

As the focal points of the City’s lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine and the Youth Museum draw thousands of people to the area annually.  The unique underground mine, the recreated coal camp, the Youth Museum and the Mountain Homestead are surrounded by inviting lawns, colorful flowers, picnic areas, an imposing coal miner statue and a whimsical 20 ft. “Peace Totem”.

At the Exhibition Coal Mine, one can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and travail of past and present day miners.

In addition to the Mine, one can tour the period coal camp buildings situated throughout the grounds.  Lovingly restored, the Coal Company House, Superintendent’s Home, Pemberton Coal Camp Church, and the Helen Coal Camp School, give visitors a true representation of early 20th century coal camp life.

Youth Museum SWV Exhibit “Leonardo’s Lab” & Youth Activities @ Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia
Aug 20 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Explore the mind, inventions, art and ideas of the original Renaissance Man, as you engage in a dozen hand-on activities; Create a copter, solve math puzzles, try your hand a backward writing, make your own Mona Lisa masterpiece, engineer towers, bridges and simple machines.

Multiple-user workshop tables allow individuals or groups to learn about Leonardo DaVinci’s many areas of interest in science and art – 500 years ago, this amazing polymath was adding the ”A” to STEM, and now you can , too !

The exhibit explores all the fascinating facets of Leonardo’s work. His work crossed all disciplines and the exhibit captures that perfectly.

In very hands-on ways, visitors can build, sketch, test and design via activities tied to Leonardo’s era and ideas. Children and adults both will find the brain challenges, opportunities for creative expression, and intriguing ideas appealing.

The exhibition includes interactive science and art exhibits, including: a photo-op with Mona Lisa, ratio-coordinated gears to create your own 2D and 3D interlocking mechanisms, an opportunity to recreate Leonardo’s amazing tool-and-hardware-free interlocking bridge, cut out and fold your own air-powered flying ‘copter, learn Leonardo’s special mirror writing and so much more.

Leonardo’s Lab was organized by Carnegie Science Center (Pittsburgh) and presented by Sciencenter (Ithaca).

The Youth Museum complex is located in New River Park adjacent to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Museum hours are Tues. – Sat. 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Many of the exhibits and classes are funded in part by the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. For more information, call (304) 252-3730.
