Coal Mine Tours
Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine - New River Park

The Exhibition Coal Mine is the largest and most popular coal heritage destination in the region and has recently completed an extensive renovation that includes a company store, visitor center, coal museum, fudgery and gift shop. The actual tour takes visitors below ground, under the supervision of an experienced veteran coal miner. Traveling 1500 feet beneath the hillsides of New River Park, visitors are carried along track, riding authentic "man cars" from the mine entrance, to old working areas of the coal mine and back. Stops throughout the tour explore the history of low-seam coal mining from the hand-loading days into the era of modern mechanization. *Admission to the Mine is discounted during the Appalachain Festival by showing your ticket stub from the Appalachian Festival Arts & Crafts Fair

Jewelry lovers will enjoy a demonstration by Fine Art & Jewelry maker Merideth Young. There will also be a Kids Clay Class at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 25.
Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre

Join us at the Playhouse and Theatre for a event discussing the arts in Appalachia and specifically Southern West Virginia. There will be a short documentary on the screen and then presentations from some local artists and a wider group discussion after that. The cost is $5.00 per person.
Fine Art Photography Competition

An Exhibit of Photography hosted by the BAC Camera Club at 600 Johnstown Road. Also at 2:00pm, the Beckley ARt Center's Camera Club will have a demonstration. At 4:00pm the Academy of Creative Arts Student Showcase will be performing. Featuring Music Students from the performing arts program. This will be at 328 Neville Street.
West Virginia Craft Beverage Festival

1st Annual West Virginia Craft Beverage Festival. West Virginia Wineries, Hard Cider and special Craft Beer Garden alsong with a variety of talented WV crafts, LIVE music and good food!
WV Make & Take Craft
Youth Museum of Southern WV

Drop by and Make-N-Take a traditional mountain craft. The Youth Museum offers a rewarding and educational experience for people of all ages and interests. Kids can just drop in with their parents and make a traditional craft. Cost is $5.00 for general admission.

The exhibition transforms
seven beloved and award-winning picture books – The Tale of Peter Rabbit by
Beatrix Potter; The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats; Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill;
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill
Martin Jr. and John Archambault; Abuela by Arthur Dorros; and Tuesday by David
Wiesner into hands-on fun environments. An integral part of the presentation
are the enlarged, visually stunning illustration. The illustrations are the heart
of the exhibit, acting as an inclusive background for the corresponding play
environments. Children explore literacy skills and concepts through
imaginative, interactive experiences and dramatic play.
Storyland: A Trip Through
Childhood Favorites immerses children and adults in favorite picture books,
from the gardens of The Tale of Peter Rabbit to the urban snowscape of The
Snowy Day and the tropical island of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Storyland engages
visitors in storylines and literacy activities that lead them to discover that
it’s never too early to develop a love of reading.

Uptown Beckley, Main & Neville Streets

Enjoy a block party in Beckley's historic district showcasing food by local restaurants, organizations and vendors, plus free concerts by the New River Jazz Band, Shane Ingram and Daniel Lilly and The Lilly Mountaineers. Other highlights include the annual Oreo-stacking contest and children's activities.
